I think it's a good way to prevent incomprehensible monologues and diatribes, whether they are about mating rituals of cats or former soviet countries.
I can think of other options that involve buttons to flag messages, but I would rather solve it without any user interaction.

Thats a good idea, every complex problem has a very simple solution. A solution involving user interaction would allow you to collect more data on your users though...
